When we last posted we were leaving Orlando and heading south about 70 miles to
the Peace River Thousand Trails campground. As we always do we stopped at the
Mexican bakery in Bartow and stocked up on an assortment of large cookies. The
Mexican bakery is in an old grocery store in an otherwise empty shopping
center. It doesn’t even have a name, not that I know of. We found it by
accident several years ago when we had a flat tire in front of it and had to
wait for road service.
Our week in Peace River
went quickly even though there isn’t a lot to see in the campgrounds rural
location. Nestled between the town of Wauchula
and the village
of Zolfo Springs this is
cracker country. It’s mostly rangeland for cattle and a few tropical plant
nurseries.
My project for the week was servicing the batteries and
battery compartment of the motor home. I removed the batteries cleaned and
painted the locker. I cleaned the batteries and installed a water fill kit. It
replaces the battery caps and fills all the cells at once with water using a
squeeze ball pump.
One day we drove about 25 miles over to Sebring for lunch at
a Red Lobster Restaurant. [Thank you Kolman family] While in Sebring we decided
to drive thru some of the snowbird RV parks in the area. We’re thinking ahead
to when my membership in the Thousand Trails expires in 5 years. If we’ve
satisfied our wanderlust at least as far as Florida is concerned we may not renew.
Instead we’re thinking of just staying in one spot for the winter. That’s a
long way off but we’re just looking at the options.
We saw two music venues at Peace River.
The first was supposed to be a country band but it was replaced by a one man
stage show. No one ever said why the switch was made and neither Millie nor I
can remember his name but he was surprisingly good. He played guitar,
keyboards, saxophone and trumpet, not all at the same time of course.
The second show was a jam session of local entertainers that
gets together every Tuesday at Peace River.
Most of them are quite good, some may even be professionals.
We’ve gone from Peace River and are now in Miami, but that’s for the next blog.
